Three Scriptures to Cling to When you Hit Rock Bottom

I remember a time in my life when I completely hit rock bottom. It felt like the walls were caving in around me, and all I wanted to do was bury myself under my covers and disappear. I was hurting and confused. Frustrated and angry. Not sure of the ‘why’ behind my circumstances.

I was the rock in my family, and I believed being a strong woman meant I had to take on everyone’s problems. Under all of it, no one could see the pain that came with it. The tears shed. The heaviness I felt. The pain caused. I wanted to keep everything and everyone afloat, yet I myself was drowning.

I felt like God had abandoned me. What I didn’t understand yet was that what I was walking through was not rejection and abandonment, but an invitation to be refined and abide in him. In his love, he was using the pain to prune away things that held me captive.

At times, the pruning season felt extremely uncomfortable, but on the other side of it, I experienced new growth. It took painful pruning to discover what my true purpose was, and my dry season to see how I lacked in trusting God. God was deepening my roots. In the midst of it, I clung to three truths from Scripture.

Pray for God’s Peace

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Phillippians 4:6-7

Even though I felt like there was a war going on within my mind, God was using that season of my life to teach me to trust Him. I needed to remind myself daily that although I can’t see or control everything, I serve a God who does.

Choose Trust

As I began to make room for God’s truth, my worries began to drift and I learned every day how to navigate the unknowns and become more gentle with myself. Psalm 56:3 reminds us, “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.”

Remember Your Helper

Learning how to cling to God’s truth in times when I felt discomfort, allowed me to focus on the bigger picture. Even when fear crept in, I could remind myself that my future is secured in Him. “So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?” Hebrews 13:6

Over time, God took what was the old me which was withering away, drifting through the wind like chaff, and healed what was broken within me. He gave my life so much meaning, so much purpose. If you’re at rock bottom, know that you are not alone. God can meet you in the depths to deepen your faith. You are not alone or adrift. You are seen. You are known. You are loved. You are valued. You are chosen.
